Over used red pen

For most teachers, that is a need at the moment. RED PEN for marking students scripts. Teachers' dilemma:

We always encourage students to try. Do NOT leave blanks in the exam papers. No matter what always try to write something. But when they really don't study.. they start writing answers that make no sense and are nowhere near the answers. Yet teachers still have to take the time to read whatever is written.. use the RED PEN to underline...highlight ...what illegible writing that they see on the exam scripts. We had to strain our eyes to make out what is written so as to ensure that students are not shortchanged. Every point written deserve to be acknowledged. But how to give marks when what is written has nothing to do with the question? How to give marks when a one-point answer is being repeatedly explained to stretch the script from 3 lines to three quarter of a page>

So we still want them to try and write ?
